Wai Ching Ho(1943-2026)

After moving to the U.S., Hong Kong-born Wai Ching Ho studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. She went on to acclaim in productions of the National Asian American Theatre Company (NAATCO), where she acted in both contemporary and classic roles (including a 2018 iteration of Henry VI). She was first seen on American television in several episodes of the daytime soap One Life to Live (1968) and then made her motion picture debut in the Robin Williams comedy Cadillac Man (1990).Wai had been toiling in minor supporting roles until she made her breakthrough as the formidable Madame Gao in Marvel’s Daredevil (2015). She subsequently reprised her character in the spin-offs Iron Fist (2017) and The Defenders (2017). Gao, a key antagonist in all three series, was a crime boss, allied with supervillain Wilson Fisk (aka Kingpin’). She functioned as one of the five fingers of ‘The Hand’, an international syndicate, dealing in drugs and assassination and adept at occult magic. Wai played her part with great nuance, emphasising Gao’s patience and cunning as a manipulative master tactician. Belying her frail stature, Gao also excelled at martial arts, due to her enhanced strength, speed and stamina (stunt doubles for the fight scenes were Mindy Kelly and Jean Chung). Wai’s character became an integral and iconic part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.Wai’s other roles have included several appearances as different personae in Law & Order (1990), the grandmother of Constance Wu’s character Destiny in Hustlers (2019) and Mei Mei, member of a sewing group in season three of Only Murders in the Building (2021). She also provided the voice for Meilin Lee’s grandmother Wu in Pixar’s animated fantasy Turning Red (2022).Wai Ching Ho died on July 10 2026, aged 82, reportedly from the effects of a stroke.
