M.V. Vasudeva Rao

Mudabidri Venkat Rao Vasudeva Rao, better known as M. V. Vasudeva Rao, was a veteran Indian actor whose long career bridged the realms of theatre and cinema. He began as a child actor in 1928, joining the renowned theatre troupe of Gubbi Veeranna to help support his family, and spent many years honing his craft on stage before transitioning to films. His breakthrough on screen came with the role of "Choma," a Dalit bonded-labourer fighting for dignity and land rights, in Chomana Dudi (1975), a powerful adaptation of the novel by K. Shivaram Karanth. For this performance he was honored with the National Film Award for Best Actor, earning widespread acclaim for his raw authenticity and emotional depth.Though that role remains his most celebrated, Vasudeva Rao went on to appear in over 200 films across Kannada - and occasionally in Telugu, Hindi and Tamil - often in supporting parts that showcased his versatility and grounding in realism. In later years he returned to the stage from time to time but continued to contribute to cinema with character roles. His dedication to portraying marginalized lives with sensitivity and dignity left a lasting imprint on Indian parallel cinema and theatre.
